We applaud the California Supreme Court’s historic decision on marriage. The support and dignity for couples in a loving and committed relationship is long overdue. “I am beyond happy. I’ve been with Veronica for 24 years, through sickness and health we’ve loved and supported each other while raising our 25 year old daughter. Now, I can finally marry the person I love,” said 59-year-old Margarita Babb. According to a report from UCLA’s Williams Project, there are over 90,000 same-sex couples living in California with Latinos comprising 25% of these. Latino same-sex couples are also more likely than any other ethnic group to be raising children, it is estimated that there are over 30,000 Latino children being raised in same-sex led households. “This historic decision is a victory for all Californians who believe in fairness. As a community we must value and respect people’s rights to fulfill their hopes and dreams. Today’s court decision has finally ensured equality and fairness for couples who want to get married as part of their loving commitment to each other.” said Oscar De La O, BIENESTAR’s President.
Nosotro/as en la Coalicion de Somos Latin@s LGBT celebra la decisión de la Corte Suprema de California por la igualdad en el matrimonio civil. Finalmente toda pareja tendrá la oportunidad de recibir el apoyo y la dignidad que merecen. “Estoy muy feliz por la decisión. Mi pareja Verónica y yo tenemos 24 años juntas, hemos luchado como cualquier otra pareja para mantener nuestra unión fuerte y juntas criamos a nuestra hija de 25 años de edad. Hoy finalmente podré casarme con la persona que yo amo.” Dijo Margarita Babb de 59 años de edad. Según el censo del 2000, en California se estima que hay mas de 90 mil parejas del mismo sexo con el 25 por ciento de estas siendo Latinas. Las parejas Latinas del mismos sexo son mas propensas que cualquier otro grupo étnico a estar criando niños en sus hogares. Actualmente se estima que mas de 30 mil niños latinos tienen como padres a parejas del mismo sexo. “Esta decisión es una victoria para todos los Latinos en California ya que como comunidad tenemos la responsabilidad de promover el respeto y la justicia para toda persona. El matrimonio civil es un derecho básico que merecen todas las parejas que se han comprometido a compartir una vida de amor y respeto.” Dijo Oscar De La O, Presidente de BIENESTAR.

The Gay Men’s Domestic Violence Project (GMDVP) supports Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (GBT) victims and survivors of domestic violence through education, advocacy and direct services. The GMDVP is looking for volunteers to help in this goal. The Network/La Red is a grassroots organization focused on ending domestic violence in lesbian, bisexual women's and transgender communities. Current research shows that 25-33% of the LGBT community experience domestic violence and that this battering is equal in severity and frequency to that in heterosexual relationships. To address this community health and safety issue, The Network/La Red provides a hotline voice: 617-742-4911 tty: 617-227-4911 , emergency shelter, advocacy, support groups, court accompaniment, and community education and outreach. They also collaborate in approximately 17 coalitions, caucuses and/or roundtables across Massachusetts to build awareness and intolerance of LGBT domestic violence.
